Chapter Ten

Garrett stared at the flap and his hand shook with fear. The envelope that Sharlee had made no secret was under her keyboard and held the Homeland explanation of events of the last two years. What would be inside the folded paper was hopefully more of what he already knew. Sliding the page of a single-spaced typed sheet of words, he poured a finger of whiskey and sat in the closest armchair. After sipping the expensive liquor, he set the glass on the side table and set his eyes on the first line.

Please find enclosed an overview of the last two years. I have not disclosed the specific details due to obvious reasons associated with national security, however; I am confident it is enough. Neither Homeland nor Katrina agreed formally or freely during the entire two years of service given by Special Agent Long. It was all instigated and enforced by Bernard Kane. It is a tragedy of power and greed.

The first paragraph told of how Special Agent Kane had tried to entice Katrina to take on a long undercover job. She had declined, citing personal reasons. Her father had medical problems that were later determined to be due, in part, to the Mexican Mafia. Immediately, the cartel soon found out about Mr. Long’s import/export business and wanted to use it as a front to do illegal trafficking. It wasn’t long before the Mafia had their hands in the pie. Where the cartel was, the mafia was. He refused even though his youngest daughter had recently married someone in that same mafia, El Dragón.

When Katrina had gone home to help her family, she discovered her sister’s association and tried to get her father to sell his business. She told Kane about the problem. Instead of sending in unknowns to work the intel, he forced her through coercion, using family to ensure her compliance. Kane’s goal was for promotion. He was willing to get her off the street work if she did this last job, which he promised was short.

Kane, without authorization, extended Katrina each time she found additional evidence using more intense threats to force her to continue either using her parents, her sister, or her friends and partner in Kentucky to guarantee her compliance.

According to the letter, Kane eventually caved to pressure from Garrett Sullivan. To stop Garrett from following Katrina any further, he stated she was killed in the line of duty. Within six months, Kane lost his job and thought Katrina could get it back for him by finding one additional bit of evidence. It’s our belief that Kane was headed for a breakdown and finally had a full emotional break from reality. By this time, Katrina had been in the field for well over two years. Kane’s continued leverage lost traction when she had no more money and was looking for a way to disappear. As an ultimate act of desperation, Kane said he would expose her to the
